Treasure Island is an adventure story about an innkeeper’s son (Jim Hawkins) in the 1700s, who gets caught up with pirates and a search for buried treasure. Its influence has been enormous on the popular perceptions of pirates, including such elements as treasure maps marked with an ‘X’, tropical islands and one-legged seamen bearing parrots on their shoulder.
Ken Ludwig’s adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island premiered at the Alley Theatre in Houston, TX in April, 2007 and played at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket on London’s West End in 2008. For that production Ludwig won the Distinguished Play Award for Best Adaptation of the Year.
