About Club Indigo

Club Indigo

What is it? A Calumet Theatre innovation, begun in 1994 with the express goal of offering a Friday evening of gourmet food and fine screen entertainment - a reasonably priced TGIF once a month, generally aimed at the entire family, but arranged to make couples and singles pleasantly comfortable in an informal atmosphere. The buffets, alternating among the finest chefs in the Copper Country, are created to match the films; for example, French cuisine for a French movie; Southwestern cooking for a movie made in Texas.

The movies are selected from thousands to guarantee a refreshing change from contemporary Hollywood offerings (foreign and American classics, documentaries, etc.) - food for the mind as well as the emotions. Samples from the past include Charlie Chaplin's "The Great Dictator," "Casablanca", Fellini's "Amacord", "To Kill a Mockingbird", Hitchcock's "Rear Window", "The Gods Must Be Crazy", Kurosawa's "Yojimbo", Bergman's "Seventh Seal", Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane", silent film festivals, screwball comedies of the 30s, and the best of Finnish cinema.

Each Club Indigo begins with a buffet in the theatre's ballroom at 6pm, followed by the movie on the big screen in the theatre at 7:15pm. The movie is introduced with a 10-minute live introduction, a brief lecture on the film and its specific value as lasting entertainment, by a film authority from Michigan Tech.

With the program heading into its 15th season in March, it must be doing something right. Tourists love it and "regulars" wait with anticipation for every monthly event.

Upcoming films are posted within these web pages. Anyone interested in attending should call the theatre at least a day in advance to assure seating at the buffet: 906-337-2610. Current admission is $17 for meal and film; $5 for film alone. Children, half price.
